Counting calories | plus.maths.org

bathroom scales

Struggling with your new year resolution to lose weight? Perhaps the weight isn’t going down quite as fast as you’d hoped? Then I have good news for you, and I have bad news for you.

The good news is that you probably aren’t doing anything wrong, instead the standard rule of thumb that predicts weight loss is wrong. This rule, known as the 3500 kilocalorie per pound rule, is used almost everywhere, including the NHS here in the UK, countless weight loss programmes around the world and the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the USA. The rule predicts that weight loss is roughly linear – as long as you continue to cut 500 kilocalories a day from your diet (say, eating 2000 kcal a day where before you consumed 2500 a day), you’ll carry on losing around half a kilogram a week. It's immediately obvious that there's a problem – if this linear rule was true it would suggest you'd eventually weigh zero kilograms! But even if we only use this rule for predicting weight loss over a limited period of time it still isn't helpful. "The standard rule of thumb is completely wrong," said Kevin Hall at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Vancouver last week. "It presents too rosy a picture and overestimates weight loss as it doesn’t account for the metabolic changes that take place when people lose weight."

Fundamentally you will lose weight if you consume less calories than you burn, but the rate at which you burn calories depends on both your metabolism and your body composition. Cutting calories out of your diet slows your metabolism down; you lose weight quickly at first but this rate of loss slows down until your weight eventually plateaus. And the rate at which you lose or gain weight also depends on the ratio of fat to lean tissues in your body: people with a greater proportion of body fat will lose it more quickly, but equally they’ll gain body fat more quickly too. Taking both these aspects into account, Hall and his colleague Carson Chow, both from the NIH, have developed a more realistic model of weight loss. In their model, cutting a constant amount of calories from your diet will result in an exponential decrease in your weight, rather than the linear decrease predicted by the old rule.

predicted weight loss

The red line shows the weight loss predicted by the old rule of thumb. The blue line shows the model's more accurate prediction.

For example, their model predicts that if a 100kg man reduces his calorie intake by just under 500 kilocalories per day, he will eventually lose 25 kilograms (the blue line). However in the first year he will only lose 50% of this weight, and will have lost 95% of the weight by the end of the third year . This more realistic rate of weight loss contrasts with the expectations created by the standard rule of thumb: the 3500 kilocalorie rule predicts he will lose 22 kilograms in the first year (the red line) – it’s not surprising that many people give up when they have only lost around half the weight they were expecting to despite sticking to their diet for 12 long months!

The exact shape of this weight loss curve doesn’t just depend on your diet, other factors also include physical activity, age, gender and most importantly, initial weight and body composition. Chow and Hall are the first people to mathematically analyse weight loss as a dynamical system, describing how the amount of body fat and lean mass in an individual change over time (where their total weight is the sum of your body fat and lean mass). "The irony is the most interesting place in a dynamical system is its fixed points, they tell you everything," says Chow. A fixed point is where nothing changes: your weight is stable, as long as you continue living the same lifestyle, in terms of diet and physical activity.

Previously everyone had assumed that for a given lifestyle there was a unique fixed point. But Chow and Hall mathematical analysis revealed that their model of weight loss, as well as all the models from past research, instead have a fixed line. "The steady state is not a fixed point, it's a fixed line and the implications of this are profound. There is no unique steady state: it depends on the contingencies of history. So if some accidental happening in life [altered your weight and body composition] (say in childhood you may have broken your leg and eaten a lot and become obese), then you’re going to be stuck there through no fault of your own. Whereas your twin, identical to you genetically and living the same life, has a totally different weight."

This sort of model, called an energy partition model, has been used in past research to describe how weight changes when too many, or too little, calories are consumed. But, in addition to analysing such a model as a dynamical system, Chow and Hall are also the first to use real data to design and validate it. In particular, an energy partition model uses a partition function to describe how the excess energy is converted to fat versus lean tissue (or how body fat versus lean tissue decreases when insufficient energy is consumed). "In the past people just assumed some partition rule that wasn’t based on data," says Chow. For example they may have assumed all excess energy was converted to fat, or half was converted to fat and half to lean tissue. "We came up with a better way to partition that’s more physiologically based. We looked at cross-sectional data to see how fat and lean is distributed and we used that to define the partition rule."

The team has created an online body weight simulator for individuals, researchers and doctors to use to produce more realistic weight loss expectations. In fact this tool produces a range of expected weight loss curves, recognising the variability in how different individuals' weight respond to changes in diet and exercise. They have also applied their mathematical model to whole populations, producing more realistic predictions about how government policies such as taxing sugary drinks, would impact on obesity levels.

But the real power of the old 3500 kilocalorie rule was its simplicity. Therefore Hall and Chow have also come up with a new rule of thumb by simplifying their model – for every 10 kilocalories you cut out of your diet you can expect to lose around half a kilogram. The bad news is that it will take a lot longer than the old rule suggested: you can expect to lose 50% of your total weight loss in the first year, finally coming close to your target weight (having lost 95% of the total weight loss) after three years. Both their model and their simplified rule of thumb make it clear that there are no quick fixes: we’ll have to change our diets permanently if we wish to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

Taking three years to lose weight might seem disheartening, but, as Chow points out, maintaining small changes will make a big difference: "Eat just one less cookie a day (about 150 kilocalories) you'll lose 7 kilograms over 3 years." So ultimately this is good news – you might just be one cookie a day away from a new and healthier you!

Home built CNC Machine Part 1 - Supported Linear Rails

This instructable is part of an on-going project to build a home CNC machine.  In this part of the project, I will show you how to build a supported linear rail which can be adapted for the desired length (X-Axis) of your own CNC project.

Most people are put off from building a useful sized CNC machine because of the cost of parts.  Others use angle iron and skate board bearings for their linear rails.  The instructable may look compllicated but it really is not.  With a little care, it is possible to make an accurate CNC machine and will enable you to build a decent sized machine.

When I first designed my machine, I started to look at much cheaper alternatives to aluminium box sections, proprietary lead screws and proprietary linear rails.  I finally decided to build my machine to this design which includes some junk yard parts and home made linear rails which can be made to any practical length required.  The parts shown in yellow are steel parts which are fabricated by a local laser or plasma cutting shop and will form part of a later instructable.

The two end sections of the base were cut from industrial shelving brackets obtained from my local junk yard to which I have welded cleats for connection of the linear rails.  The two (red) intermediate rails are steel channel with steel cleats welded on the end.  The overall size of my machine bed is 800mm x 1800mm but of course you may build your machine to whatever (practical) size that you wish.

pen laser pointer, laser pointer » The return and repair of green laser ...

The testing center of       green laser pointer has the advanced inspecting instrument. Application from the current domestic situation analysis, CO2 laser cutting is widely used 12mm thick carbon steel plate; 6mm thick stainless steel plate and; 20mm thick non-metallic materials. For the three-dimensional space curve cutting in the automotive, aviation industry is also beginning to receive the application. Muqian suitable for CO2 laser cutting of products in general can be summarized into three categories: the first category: technical and economic point of view should not be made from a metal sheet metal dies, especially profile shape of the complex, small-volume, general thickness; 12mm low-carbon steel,; 6mm thick stainless steel, in order to save manufacturing costs and cycle the mold. Has been used in typical products: structural parts of escalators, elevator panels, machine tools and food processing machinery housings, all kinds of electrical cabinets, switchgear, textile machinery parts, construction machinery structural parts, such as large electrical silicon steel. The engineer should describe the result of the appearance inspection of   green laser pointer   .
The second category: decoration, advertising, service industry with the stainless steel (general thickness of 3mm) or non-metallic materials (general thickness of 20mm) patterns, marks, font and so on. Companies, organizations, hotels, shopping malls mark, stations, terminals, public places in English fonts. The third category: uniform kerf requires special parts. The most widely used packaging and printing industry is a typical part of the die used, it requires the template in 20mm thick wood cut out on the slot width of 0.7 ~ 0.8mm slot, and then embedded in the blade slot. Fashion in the cutting machine to use, good cut of the printed graphics box. China in recent years, a new area of application of oil sieve slit tube. In order to block the sediment into the pump, the wall thickness of the steel pipe 6 ~ 9mm on uniform cut 0.3mm kerf width, cut from the perforation hole diameter not greater than 0.3mm, cutting technical difficulties, has not small production units. Foreign addition to the above applications, is also expanding its applications. Three-dimensional laser cutting system or configuration of industrial robots, cutting space curve, the development of three-dimensional cutting software, to speed up the parts from the drawing to the cutting process. The new production line of   green laser pointer   will be completed in two days.
In order to improve production efficiency, research and development of a variety of special cutting systems, material handling system, linear motor drive system, at present, the cutting speed cutting system has more than 100m/min. For the expansion of construction machinery, shipbuilding and other industrial applications, cutting mild steel thickness over 30mm, with particular attention to the study of low carbon steel with nitrogen cutting technology to improve the quality of cutting plate incision. Therefore, in China’s expanding CO2 laser cutting of industrial applications, new applications to solve some technical problems in engineering and technical personnel is still an important issue. CO2 laser cutting several key technologies is optical, mechanical and electrical integration, integrated technology. Laser beam parameters, and numerical control machine system performance and accuracy have a direct impact on the efficiency and quality of laser cutting. Especially for high precision cutting of parts or thick, you must understand and address the following key technologies: the focus position control technology: One of the advantages of laser cutting beam of high energy density, the general 10W/cm2. The testing center of      laser pointer pen contains four departments.
As the energy density and 4/πd2 proportional to the focal spot diameter as small as possible in order to produce a narrow kerf; the same time and the lens focal spot diameter is also proportional to the depth of focus. The smaller the focusing lens depth of focus, the focus spot diameter smaller. But cutting a splash, too close to the lens away from the workpiece lens is easy to damage, so it is high-power CO2 laser cutting is widely used in industrial applications 5 〃 ~ 7.5 〃 “(127 ~ 190mm) focal length. The actual focus spot diameter of 0.1 ~ 0.4mm between the quality of the cutting, the effective depth of focus and the lens diameter and was also cut material for such a lens with a 5 〃 cutting carbon steel, depth of focus as the focal length of the 2% range, that is about 5mm, so the focus of control relative to the cut surface of the material is very important. to take into consideration the quality of cut, cutting speed and other factors, in principle, 6mm metal materials, the focus is on the surface; 6mm carbon steel, the focus above the surface; 6mm stainless steel, the focus in under the surface. the specific size determined by experiment in industrial production in an easy way to determine the focus position, there are three: Print method: the cutting head from the top down movement, the laser beam in the plastic sheet printing, print the minimum diameter at the focus . The customer visited the new production line of   green laser pointer   yesterday.

Real Cut 1D - Dodownload

Real Cut 1D is a computer program used for obtaining optimal cutting designs of one dimensional pieces which may have angles different of 90 degrees at both extremities.  Real Cut 1D can be used for cutting linear pieces such as bars, pipes, tubes, steel bars, etc.

Pieces to be cut can have angles different of 90 degrees at their extremities. A lot of material can be saved by properly matching 2 pieces having sharp extremities. For instance, if you match 2 pieces having 45 degrees at their extremities you will save as much as the height of the pieces.
Compute the cutting order which is very important if the extremities have angles different of 90 degree. If all angles have 90 degrees the cutting order is not important.

The game of golf Ideas — Tips on how to Hit Away ... - Linear Graph

This particular golf hint covers the very best the one that We have ever received. No, that was not with regards to “adding long distance to your drives. inches Nor was that with regards to “foolproof getting. inches Instead, contrary to popular belief, the very best idea We have ever received was in fairway bunkers.

The complete heart and soul with the idea is really as comes after? “keep your own reduce physique as even now as you possibly can while smacking the fairway bunker shot”.

It absolutely was quite a long time in the past which i received the tip. (In a summertime the game of golf camp and also In my opinion the brand was John Mulhearn.)#) In addition, it appears eerie in which decade following your simple fact, I even now consider it every time I get into the fairway bunker. For that reason, We have often thought secure and also had the oppertunity for you to perform away from the fairway capture, no matter what situation my personal sport has been doing. A large point to remember can be in which since this is a less ambitious swing, you will have to acquire further membership.

Are you aware that golf basics over the top slicer, this more supple reduce physique will result in less whirl of one’s body. At any time anyone whirl out there and acquire in which appropriate facet moving out there and also over, this can result in cutting. Once you slice, specifically inside a fairway bunker, you have almost absolutely no possibility of doing the actual photo. Instead, you need to find the basketball as clean up as you possibly can. This particular calm reduce physique will allow you to do this.

To increase motivate this “picking that clean” activity, your own appropriate make should seem like that continues to be immobile to start the actual downswing.

This is a record to suit your needs whenever you get into the actual horrible fairway bunker:

Consider a few further night clubs.
Spot the actual basketball a little a greater distance back in position when compared with normal.
Search inside a minor (yellow sand can be slick unless you get to the lower of it!)#)
Currently for that entertaining part’swing whilst preserving your own reduce physique as even now as you possibly can.
A couple of good photos to help achieve this are for you to “freeze your own reduce physique as being a digital camera tripod”, or pretend that like you are playing golf on hot ice.

Make use of these thoughts on pictures via with regards to 80 back yards and up. Anything at all below this is a individual pet entirely and also requires a few modifications. I am going to get to in which inside a upcoming idea.

What Do I Know?: "linear in a non-linear world" Brian Dettmer ...

Brian Dettmer is concerned about the replacement of the book - relatively tangible and lasting records of words - by intangible pixels which can be altered or which may be inaccessible as newer technology replaces the recent.  So he's sculpted books to get people to look at and think about books differently.

This one below is sculpted from "A New Garden Encyclopedia."  Look at it carefully.

From Dettmer's website:

The age of information in physical form is waning. As intangible routes thrive with quicker fluidity, material and history are being lost, slipping and eroding into the ether. Newer media swiftly flips forms, unrestricted by the weight of material and the responsibility of history. In the tangible world we are left with a frozen material but in the intangible world we may be left with nothing. History is lost as formats change from physical stability to digital distress.

The richness and depth of the book is universally respected yet often undiscovered as the monopoly of the form and relevance of the information fades over time. The book’s intended function has decreased and the form remains linear in a non-linear world. By altering physical forms of information and shifting preconceived functions, new and unexpected roles emerge. This is the area I currently operate in. Through meticulous excavation or concise alteration I edit or dissect communicative objects or systems such as books, maps, tapes and other media. The medium’s role transforms. Its content is recontextualized and new meanings or interpretations emerge.

All these sculptures are from books.  Here's Dettmer's explanation of what he does:

"In this work I begin with an existing book and seal its edges, creating an enclosed vessel full of unearthed potential. I cut into the surface of the book and dissect through it from the front. I work with knives, tweezers and surgical tools to carve one page at a time, exposing each layer while cutting around ideas and images of interest. Nothing inside the books is relocated or implanted, only removed. Images and ideas are revealed to expose alternate histories and memories. My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception. "

I didn't catch the title of this one, but below is a close up of it.  Double click the image to enlarge it.

Bishop-Wisecarver: Linear Guide Wheels and Track for Woodworking

When you're sawing, drilling or carving wood, chips and debris are gonna fly. That's why a self-cleaning motion system is a must. A story in this month's issue of Custom Woodworking Business magazine about the latest woodworking technologies, namely computer-programmed boring, drilling and cutting machines, prompted us to take a coffee break with our Senior Project Engineer Ariel Oriel to talk about the subject. Here's a wrap-up of our conversation:

THE CHALLENGE In an environment choked with sawdust and wood chips, jamming becomes a problem. Pair that with required speeds of up to 600 inches per minute and loads ranging roughly from 50 to 300 pounds, and you've got yourself a linear motion challenge — because of the speed and load, these machines need a motion system with quick field adjustment and durability.

APPLICATION EXAMPLES Think about all the different machines that go into manufacturing wood products — something to drill panels, solid wood or composites and another to make dowels or insert them. Manufacturers turn to CNC machines to do all those things and more.

A three-axis XYZ movement CNC router allows for a full array of cutting actions for materials like wood, plastic, composites, non-ferrous metals, aluminum, ceramics and foams. These computer-controlled routers often have drill spindles, some type of design software, a control center and different sized tables.

SOLUTION Some of our customers use six DualVee wheels on each slide plate to make it sturdy and long-lasting. The wheels allow the X and Y axes to move along the table with the Z axis motion of the cutting tool.

Oriel told us during our talk that one of the most discussed issues in woodworking machines for linear motion solutions is debris and how to deal with it. Basically, how do you keep your CNC machine from clogging up? Linear guide wheel technology is a proven solution for many woodworkers. The 90-degree design creates a velocity gradient (because the circumference of the wheel is greater at the major diameter than the minor diameter) that causes a constant sweeping action that cleans debris off the track.

"The inherent self-cleaning attribute of the [ DualVee ] guide wheel and track components make it the ideal choice for this type of environment," Oriel said. "Basically, it's just not prone to getting jammed up. The rolling elements are impervious to the wood chip debris that's just unavoidable in the industry."

The article in Custom Woodworking Business also touches on another important element: quality. Vibration is reduced when the design engineer uses high quality tools and tool holders elsewhere on the machine, extending the life of the router motor bearings and other important elements.

PRODUCT BREAKDOWN A variety sizes and types exist when it comes to linear motion components, so it's important to talk specifications with a project engineer when considering your perfect fit. From one machine using 80 to 100 DualVee wheels and track [ view story ] to a DIY cnc router with just a dozen linear motion components, we've helped many designers create their perfect woodworking solution.

Want more on the DualVee product line? Check out this video example posted below. DualVee can move more than 30 feet per second, and can withstand temperatures ranging from 20 below to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The track and wheels come in a variety of metal, including stainless steel, ideal for heavy industrial applications like woodworking.

After really getting into this, I haven’t been able to find a downside of the Makita LS1016. At least not easily. It’s definitely a saw that comes with great value and is well worth the price. You’ll find it to be very useful and handy when dealing with many of your cutting needs. Some say that this miter saw is not that portable because it is heavy to carry around. However, compared to other miter saws of its kind, it is definitely smaller and more compact.

All in all I highly recommend this saw as it has proven to be one of the best of the bunch.

BackPack Film School™ » “Film Editing: Theory and Practice” just ...

The “Digital Filmmaker” series has a new entry . . . my book!

Check it out in its Kindle Edition for now.  The hard copy is on its way.

Here is the book description:

Designed for the novice or for a course in film editing, the book is the perfect introductory text. In this book, you will read about the history of film editing, and how it developed from the single-shot movies of the 1890s to the crazy split-second montages of today. You will be exposed to different editing aesthetics – the when, how and why of cutting, as well as the proper terms for different shots – so that you can think about the development of your own style. You will read some in-depth shot-by-shot breakdowns of various film scenes, as illustrations of these different aesthetics. You will explore the different editing concerns of narrative (fiction) films vs. documentaries, and full-length features vs. shorts. You will read about the invention of non-linear editing systems, such as the AVID and Final Cut Pro, and how they have affected the film industry and editing styles. You will learn the basic interface of Apple’s less-expensive non-linear editing system – Final Cut Express – as well as LiveType, the innovative text and titles generator that Apple bundles with it. You will also read about the all-important issue of understanding formats and compression. Finally, you will work with the accompanying video footage, included on the companion DVD, in a variety of different ways to put theory into practice and drive home the lessons of the book. For projects, it covers the latest version of Final Cut Express, contains structured exercises, and uses video clips on the companion DVD, to allow the reader to apply the lessons of the book in clear and entertaining ways.

And while it’s true that Apple released Final Cut Pro X in June, 2011, it’s also true that many people don’t like it and are sticking to the legacy software apps for now, while they figure out what the future holds.  So – at least for a few years – you can count on the info in here being relevant and applicable to both Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro 7.  So read on, MacEditor!

One final note – somehow, in the revision process, the acknowledgements that I had written for the intro were taken out, and I never noticed.  Here they are now:

Acknowledgements

As with most books, this one could not have been written without the contributions of people other than the author.  First and foremost, I wish to thank Gerald Jones, who approached me with the idea of this filmmaking series and asked me to write the editing book.  I also wish to thank his frequent collaborator Pete Shaner, the technical editor of this series, for spending many hours reading and vetting the technical information presented here.  Any mistakes that remain are mine and mine alone.

Next, I must acknowledge David Pallai, the text editor, and his terrific team at Mercury, for poring over the chapters herein for grammatical and formatting errors.  Their services were invaluable.  The result of their labors is the smooth flow of the pages ahead.

I also wish to thank Sarah Jones and Sam Peterson.  A number of years ago, they acted in the short film, Nail Polish, which provides the raw materials for the editing practice exercises in later chapters.  Their work was quite amazing, and you are lucky to be able to cut and recut their performances in a variety of ways.

Finally, I must thank Jennifer McLeran, whose unflagging patience and love throughout this writing process has been truly inspiring and comforting.  Without her, I could not have completed the work.  Plus, my dog, Lizzy (whom you will meet in Chapter 12), would have had a terrible time of it, as well.  Woof.

Enjoy!

Novel optimization modeling applications for environmental and ...

This dissertation presents three studies that demonstrate the use of optimization modeling techniques for gaining insight into complex environmental and energy systems and providing decision support. The first uses multi-objective linear programming and hydrological modeling to improve decisions made by land use planners when faced with conflicting economic and environmental objectives. The second uses linear programming theory and statistical modeling to approximate the response of large scale linear programming based policy models to new sets of inputs, thus cutting down on the number of large scale model runs required to achieve a desired policy solution. The final study uses stochastic dynamic programming, Monte Carlo simulation, and linear programming, to assess the efficacy of traditional types of commitment and dispatch modeling in power systems with increasing levels of renewable energy integration, and proposes an improved modeling approach. The three studies share the following themes. Each encourages the efficient use of resources to maximize economic benefit while adhering to environmental constraints. Although the first two can be applied to many sectors, each of the three studies has applications in the electricity industry. Together, each study could represent a different aspect of efficient electricity system planning under environmental constraints; from local land use planning of new power installations in the first study, to long term national power system policy planning in the second study, to efficient operation of power systems that include renewable sources of energy in the third. The second chapter presents the land use planning model, and an application to the Chagrin watershed in the Lake Erie basin. The methods in this chapter are used to explore the tradeoffs in land development between economic objectives, represented by proxies such as proximity to existing development, and ecological objectives, represented by the hydrological impact of land use change on the watershed. The third chapter presents the methodology developed for metamodeling of large scale linear programming-based policy models. This study has been applied to the US Environmental Protection Agencys Integrated Planning Model IPM) to predict the response of system costs and emissions to changes in policy instruments and system assumptions. Examples of policy instruments that IPM can be used to investigate include potential future carbon dioxide caps or taxes, and measures to limit other pollutants such as mercury and nitrogen oxides. Examples of system assumptions include the costs and capacity constraints of technology like carbon capture and storage or nuclear energy, and expected fuel costs. The methodology is not limited to IPM and is applicable to approximating the response of any convex program. The fourth chapter develops a stochastic dynamic programming formulation for electricity system unit commitment and dispatch in systems with uncertain supply from renewable energy sources. An application is presented for the Netherlands electricity system in which the marginal value of additional wind power is quantified, accounting for ramp limits and uncertainty in wind forecasts.
